How do I follow up on a job application?

I am applying to anywhere I can get a job (McDonald's, Taco Bell, Etc.). I am newly out of high school and unemployed and have only worked at one job (family I know hired me to work at a putt putt) my whole life. I do not know when I need to call to follow up and I don't know what to ask or say when I call to the places. Any help?
