Is it true that you can't record in a Public School?

I was in my English Class, me and my friends were messing around and I recorded it and putted it on YouTube, then my teacher told me that it was illegal to do that. I could care less because I already putted it on YouTube and everything is cool, I just want to know if she knew what she was talking about.
